Tips for Moving from California to Florida
I did the big move myself and I am here to assist you. Of course you need to find your perfect home first and foremost and that's what I am here to do... but making that
move from California to Florida can be stressful. Here are some insights and tips to help you navigate the other parts of the transition smoothly:
Planning Your Move
Preparing your current home and getting it sold is the BIG first step!!
Start early: Begin planning your move at least a 3-6 months in advance.
Cost of living: Compare housing prices, taxes, and overall cost of living between California and Florida.
Budget for the move: Consider costs for moving services, travel, and any new living expenses. Declutter before you move: Take the opportunity to downsize and get rid of items you no longer need.
Get Loan Pre-approval if you are financing your new home. Can't submit offers without pre-approval and being prepared with that is crucial.
Choosing the Right Location
Research neighborhoods: Look into different areas in Florida to find the right fit for your lifestyle.
Consider proximity to work and schools: Ensure your new home is convenient for commuting and education.
Explore local amenities: Check for nearby parks, shopping centers, and recreational activities.
Do you mind if you are in a flood zone? (higher insurance costs and risk of flood)
Adjusting to the Climate
Prepare for humidity: Florida's weather can be quite different from California's; invest in air conditioning.
Stay hydrated: The heat can be intense, so drink plenty of water.
Embrace outdoor activities: Take advantage of the sunny weather and explore local beaches and parks.
Settling In
Register your vehicle: Make sure to update your driver's license and vehicle registration.
File for Homestead exemption to reduce your property taxes. (Rules change after Dec 31, 2026)
Explore local culture: Attend community events and visit local attractions to familiarize yourself with the area.
Meet your neighbors: Building relationships in your new community can help you feel more at home.
Change your address: Make sure to update your address with the post office and any relevant institutions.
Register your vehicle: Familiarize yourself with Florida's vehicle registration and driver's license requirements.
By following these tips, you can ensure a smoother transition from California to Florida and make the most of your new adventure!
